Like a deer caught in the headlights

9 August 2012

Picture the following conversation:

Husband - You’ve done it again!

Me - What?

Husband - You looked to the right!

Can you guess what we’re talking about her? Yes, that’s right, crossing the road. Despite having now been in Berlin for almost a year, my brain still gets confused about which side to look for on coming cars before crossing the road. I instinctively wand to look to the right. Because right is right, right? Wrong! Right is left here, or left is right, which ever way you look at it. At least when you’re the pedestrian. If you’re the one driving the car then right is right and left is wrong. Right. At least I have the husband to keep me right, or rather left, and when I’m on my own or just with the boy, I tend to look both right and left a couple of times for good measure, then scuttle across the road when the coast is clear like a deer caught in the headlights. Or I try to cross at traffic lights where possible. Which is another story altogether…
