This week is going to be a bit heavy on food blogging, because it’s time for another round of ‘Post aus meiner Küche’, the bi-monthly food exchange project where you send your exchange partner something you made in your kitchen to a specific theme. After first chocolate and then berries, the latest theme was picnic. I had to really put on my thinking cap for this one, but it’s been my favourite theme so far. It was fun putting together an ensemble of things you’d need for a picnic. Here’s what I came up with:
Picnic for 4
I concluded that you’d have to have something savoury, something sweet and something to drink. And some tableware and picnic decorations of course.
For the savoury dish I baked 4 mini cheese loafs. I actually just used my trusted cheese muffin recipe for this. The recipe makes about 8 mini loafs or 12 muffins (I made doubles of everything, as I could never get away with baking something and not letting the boy have a taste^^). The recipe is really simple:
For the sweet dish, I baked sticky ginger cake. It has a few more steps, so I’ll post the recipe for that tomorrow.
And for the something to drink, I made lemon & lime syrup, which you then just need to top up with sparkling mineral water for some tasty lemonade. The recipe for this is really simple too. To make around 1 litre of syrup:
Finally, there was the fun part of putting together the tableware and decorations. I took my lead from the pink and white spotted mini loaf cases for my colour scheme, and added in a dash of red.
Firstly, you need cups of course to drink the lemonade out of. I was pleased to find some that were also pink and white spotted, which I then paired with red striped vintage paper straws. I am absolutely in LOVE with wooden cutlery at the moment, so some of that had to go in the parcel. I personalised it with my mini set of Muji stamps and red ink to give it a picnic feel.
On a last minuted whim, I then decided to make 4 little picnic sets out of the tableware, decorated with red and white spotted washi tape. I couldn’t find any nice paper plates, so I added in some thick pink napkins instead.
Finally, as a finishing touch I made a fabric flower garland as a wee picnic decoration, based on the idea from the supercraft box I introduced last week, though I used some pink flowered fabric instead to go with my colour scheme.
Here’s the final ensemble that went in to the parcel. There was still a wee bit of space left, so I added in a jar of my nut free pesto to go with the mini cheese loafs.
Why not go and have a picnic yourself at the weekend, weather permitting?
